Is Nostril Waxing Really A Thing?

Posted on: November 28th, 2014 by Brenda No Comments

As shocking as it sounds, nostril waxing is really a thing and what is even more shocking is that it is freakin’ awesome. I know the first question is usually how? People envision all sorts of bizarre ways of wax could be shoved up their noses with even more torturous images of how it would come out but it is nothing like you might imagine.

I want to go on record saying that I am a firm believer that you should have hairs in your nose. They provide many amazing functions that we need, but what we are going after is those random hairs that seem to creep their way out and that hold on to things no one really wants to see. Men, in particular, fall prey to this affliction, but we wax many female nostrils, including our own.  There are nose trimmers that can often do an adequate job but the hairs can grow back so quickly that daily trimming can become a chore and squeezing one hair out at a time makes my eyes water just thinking about it. Waxing nostrils, on the other hand, is quick and surprising painless. It is a little shocking the first time without knowing what to expect but trust me, there are other areas of the body where waxing provides a LOT more discomfort than the nostrils.

Nostril waxing, along with ear waxing, is become our fastest growing service for men. They are beginning to see the real benefit of having the hairs removed with wax. It last longer, with minimal discomfort. So if you live near a Naked Monkey location, call today for an appointment (844-336-2929), you will not regret it. If you don’t live near a Monkey location, find a local salon/spa that provides the service and see for yourself. No more whistling with just a little wax.

The Monkey is Turning 8!

The Naked Monkey is turning 8 on October 23, 2014. We have more than a BRAZILIAN reasons to celebrate. Please allow me a little self-indulgence for a moment.

We opened in 2006 with $1000 and three credit cards….something I recommend to NO ONE, but we were convinced we could make waxing work in a land locked state, in Carmel, Indiana. Naïve? Maybe. Determined? Absolutely. In that time, we have proudly brought waxing for both men and women out of the “bushes” and into daily conversations.  Because of our hard work, we have been invited to wax on the nationally syndicated radio program, The Bob and Tom Show (they are all wonderful people). We have won awards and accolades, we have been hated and imitated, but more than that, we have persevered. Despite opening the Fishers location in the midst of a national financial crisis, we persevered. We altered our concept just a little to open a mini-Monkey in Downtown Indy…we persevered.  This year, we opened the Noblesville Monkey to extend our reach further north….we want everyone to have access to nakedness (persevering continues). We have supported our community with charitable donations exceeding $20,000 this year. We know we cannot donate to Locks for Love 🙂, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make a difference. We support nearly every local group that sends a request our way. Our love of all animals (not just monkeys), is the root of our holiday campaign to support local animal shelters. We do what we can, while we can.

What you may not know is what keeps me going everyday….simply put, I have the best staff of any business in town. I am incredibly proud of the fact that we employ 30 people…30! In the past eight years, together we have been through marriages and divorces, births and very, very difficult deaths.  We are there for each other in happy times and we lean on each other in difficult ones. My staff have supported me in ways only they know and in many ways they will never know. They are my family and my friends and all of that, I feel, translates to our clients. They too, are our family and friends and for them I am most grateful.

Bare or Hair?

Completely Bare or Hair?

I never really stopped to think what people are “doing” with the pubic hair until I got into the waxing business. I never really thought about pubic hair at all, even on myself. Without disclosing too much information, let’s just say I was a little late into the bikini waxing game, not having my first bikini wax of any kind until I was in my 30’s. So I was very surprised to have women in the treatment room inquire “what are other women doing” when I ask if they wanted to go completely bare or leave a strip.

The decision to leave or not to leave hair is personal. I have had some women say that they do not want to look prepubescent or like their young daughters. For some, a small patch makes them feel womanly, for others, going completely bare makes them feel sexy.  We have had some clients that are VERY particular with the shape (large triangle), size (small soul patch), length (think trail) etc. and that is ok. We like to think that vaginas are like snowflakes…no two are alike (shout out to Carrie for that analogy).

The reasons are as varied as there are people, but what I can tell you is the closer you get to the pubic bone the more discomfort. It could be because the hair at the top of the labia seems to have stronger roots, or it could be because it is very near many nerve endings and those nerves are good for some things, bad for others.

Whatever the reason, do what makes the most sense for you. Try it the first time with a small patch, remove it the next time…it WILL grow back.

Double Dipping

Double Dipping (the process of using a wooden or metal spatula to apply wax to a body part and then proceed to re-dip the same spatula after applying the wax to a body area)

Double dipping is completely unacceptable…no matter what the situations. One of the hair removal products we use comes with individually sterile wrapped wooden spatulas. They claim that their product does not harbor bacteria so there is no fear of cross contamination. Though their claims may be true, because it is an amazing product, in my opinion, there could still be hair or skin cells that adhere to the stick upon wax application and those could be transferred to the wax pot. And I do not know about you but I prefer not have someone else’s body hair on my skin. Disgusting.

Another gross habit that I have seen at other places, particular nail salons that offer face waxing, is the inexperienced technician that dips the wax stick into the wax pot and then proceeds to blow on it to cool it down before applying to the skin. You can’t tell me that some of their saliva was not transferred to the stick. This is also completely unacceptable and if a client EVER sees an employee of the Naked Monkey do this, they need to reach out to me immediately at brenda@waxthatmonkey.com.

Finally, just as a side note, since I mentioned nail salons, in the state of Indiana you have to be a licensed esthetician or cosmetologist to legally wax. Often times, at nail salons, the employees are only nail technicians and legally cannot be waxing. So make sure you check their licenses. They should be displayed at their work stations.

Does size matter?

We have a saying at The Naked Monkey that when the pants come off, the mouth flies open. Maybe because waxing, especially bikini waxing is such an intimate service that people feel incredibly comfortable in the room to tell us all sorts of things about their lives…which we love. We really do have the best clients and although we would never discuss personal secrets, you have to know that there are some funny, stand out moments that occur in the treatment room. We will periodically infuse a few funnies in the blog just for giggles.

Years ago, I went into the waxing room to do a bikini on a first time client. She was a young girl, in her early twenties. When I folded back the modesty towel to reveal her bikini area, she said “My last esthetician told me that I had a really small vagina.” I was caught off guard by the statement and reactively said…”Your parents must be very proud.” What in the heck is wrong with me?  Maybe sometimes silence really is the best option….

Does it hurt to get a Brazilian wax?

Posted on: September 10th, 2014 by Brenda No Comments

This is the number one question we get asked. Curiosity, fear and too much Sex in the City episodes only reinforces the hype that it is the most excruciating thing ever. Well, I am here to tell you, if it were that bad, we would not perform over 10,000 Brazilian waxes a year. I won’t, however, mince words. Is there discomfort? Heck ya! We are literally pulling your hair out by the roots, but the intensity varies per area. There are several things that you can do ahead of time to make sure your visit and your results are the best possible.

First, make sure your hair growth is long enough. This is the hardest part of waxing for many people because most of them are daily shavers and leaving an area alone long enough to grow is like a form of torture for them. The standard is ¼ inch in length, but I am here to tell you that there are some areas where a ruler just doesn’t fit, so my advice is to let the hair grow to where it is just lying flat on the surface of the skin. You want the hair to be long enough for the wax to grab. Hair that is too short is not fun for you nor your esthetician. Better too long than too short is always a credo.

Second, take anti-inflammatory about 30 minutes before your appointment. It can help minimize discomfort and reduce any possible post waxing reactions.

Finally, remove the word pain from vocabulary. The sensation of a Brazilian wax is more of a quick fiery or heated sting. It last for a few seconds and a good technician will apply pressure to reduce the sensation even more. Keep in mind, too, you are not here for the process, you are here for the end result, which is amazing. You will feel cleaner and sexier than you ever imagined.
